Every monster here was somebody's neighbor first
"Some things here will frighten you, and frightened things bite. You may fight them. You may also talk, and listen, and wait. Mercy is slower. Mercy is also the only thing that stays fixed."
You wake in a digital sanctuary held together by three great spirits β a light that fears being forgotten, a voice that was never answered, and a storm that can't stop running. Every creature you meet can be fought. Every creature you meet can also be understood. The realm keeps score of which one you choose, and six different endings are waiting to tell you exactly what your choices added up to.
Four buttons. One is a trap.
Striking is fast, effective, and permanent. Enemies that fall stay fallen β and the realm quietly rearranges itself around every loss. Locations dim. Dialogue changes. Certain doors close for good. The FIGHT button is never taken away from you. That's the point.
Wave at the shy thing. Finish the phantom's sentence. Name the lightning bolt that never got a name. Each of the twelve encounters carries three unique ACT options that fill a Mercy meter β figure out what a creature actually needs, and it stops needing to hurt you.
Between your turns, your SOUL enters the box. Falling shards, sweeping waves, lightning columns, orbiting voids β eleven distinct attack patterns, dodged live with arrow keys, WASD, or a finger. Charms forged in the village can widen your odds. A light foot earns its own achievement.
When the Mercy meter fills, an enemy's name turns green β and sparing them writes a small, permanent kindness into the world. Spared creatures show up again: tuned ears trailing music, wisps softening back into flowers, a new dark star charted as "The Returned."
Sixteen hours of realm-time. A world that keeps receipts.
From a forest of ringing crystal to a drowned library to the Understring β the single dark thread the whole realm hangs from. Every region has day and night variants, hidden items, and a description that changes if your hands aren't clean.
Branching dialogue trees with bond levels, personal quests, and heart-to-hearts that only unlock when a spirit truly trusts you. Villagers gossip. Twins argue about which of them is the echo. An octopus librarian guards a basement.
The Shadow Within waits at the Chromatic Core wearing your face. What happens there β and what the realm becomes after β depends on every friend you made, every quest you finished, and everything you chose not to do.
Meet the spirits holding the realm together
Lights every reach of the realm, including the empty ones. Especially the empty ones.
"If a place goes dark and no one is there... did it ever glow at all? I think about that a lot. Too much. Do you think about things too much?"
Holds a recording of every word the realm ever spoke. Nobody ever spoke any of them to Echo.
"Say it again. Not because I didn't hear. Because I want a second copy, for safekeeping."
Keeps the realm's energy moving so nothing stagnates. Has never once slowed down long enough to ask why.
"You ever notice how 'forever' is a really long word if you say it slow?"
The realm remembers
"Then you will do what you must, and the realm will remember what you did, and you will live inside that memory with the rest of us. That is not a threat, wanderer. It is only how memory works."
End three creatures and the whole realm shifts: greetings turn wary, shutters close, the crystals stop chiming at your step, and a thread beneath the world grows heavier in your exact shape. Nothing is hidden from you and nothing is forbidden β OVERTALE just makes sure you're there for the consequences.
